Achieving a Greater
Sense of Balance in Life
(Interactive, open group therapy with support group/workshop
elements)
Topics/Key Principles:
- Identifying goals for personal & family
life/needs and compatibility with work/career goals.
- Self-assessment of needs - Open, honest
communication of needs, concerns, joys, hopes.
- Assertive self-expression of needs -
Being nice, caring about others without compromising your
health.
- Organizing yourself/life more efficiently
and effectively.
- Prioritizing responsibilities, tasks,
goals. Picking and choosing your battles carefully.
- Resisting the urge to fill all available
or newly created time space with more tasks.
- Flexibility - nothing is written in stone.
- Delegate tasks and responsibilities when
appropriate and necessary.
- Tending to your physical health, diet,
fitness, rest, downtime.
- Being mindful of daily intake of stimuli/information
as negatively or positively oriented. Considering what
is in your realm of control or out of it.
- Developing an optimistic, reasonable picture
of the future (near future) and some simple, manageable
goals.
- Coping with stress - Identifying and
utilizing strategies to help tolerate the moment, present
circumstances while pursuing positive change in your life.
- Keeping things simple - to avoid feeling
overwhelmed. Taking small, manageable steps.
- Considering the health and needs of significant
others/relationships in your life.
- Remaining grounded in reality, fact-based.
Resisting temptation to mind-read or assume the motives
of others, allowing your mind to wander (toward negativity).
- Realistic expectations - Includes making
an effort to accept the limitations and weaknesses as
well as recognize personal qualities and strengths of
self and others. Considering the fact that others, even
significant others, will eventually fail us at some point
in time is not in our control. Our willingness to accept
and, in time, forgive others for their faults, weaknesses
and offenses is within our realm of control.
- Establishing "safe time" for
self, with significant other/spouse, with children, with
family, with special friends, with God/spiritual connection.
- Activities inventory - in what areas are
you spending most of your time, where would you like to
be devoting more time and identifying barriers to the
latter.
- Role of spirituality/faith in achieving
a greater sense of balance in life.
- Finding meaning or a sense of purpose
in your personal life and work life.
Group duration 10
- 12 weeks.
Weekly sessions lasting 1.5 - 2 hours.
